Cultivating Green Guardians: Southern Arizona's Youth Environmental Leadership Initiative

When Mia Nicole Leon first joined the Youth for Blue Skies program, she was aware that her hometown of Nogales faced significant air quality challenges. However, she had yet to fully comprehend the intricate web of environmental factors that influenced the air her community breathed. Through her internship with Ironwood Tree Experience, a local environmental nonprofit, Leon began to unravel the complex dynamics shaping her local atmosphere.
As weeks of dedicated work passed, her understanding deepened, revealing how seemingly distant environmental forces intertwined to impact the air quality in her small border town. The program not only educated her about local environmental issues but also empowered her to become a more informed and proactive community member, ready to address the environmental challenges facing Nogales.
